Beddgelert, Gelert's Grave

Beddgelert Beddgelert postcard (reverse)
Gelert's Grave at Beddgelert
The legend says - Llywelyn Fawr (ap Iorwerth) went out hunting, leaving his baby son at home along with his favourite dog, Gelert. When he returned the baby's cot and Gelert were covered in blood and the baby was missing. Assuming the dog had killed his son, Llywelyn plunged his sword into the animal's side - the dog's yelp of pain and shock was answered by a baby's cry. Llywelyn found his son safe and well, nearby he found the slain body of a wolf - obviously killed by Gelert while protecting the child. Stricken with grief and remorse, Llywelyn buried Gelert and is said to have never smiled again.

The truth is a little more mundane. The village is actually believed to be named for an early saint, Celert. The legend of the slain hound and the gravestone appeared in the 18th century and are thought to have been started by the landlord of the Goat Hotel to attract more tourists to the village.
